In answer to your second question, Goethe did have other liaisons, the most significant of which was perhaps his ten-year intimacy with Charlotte von Stein in Weimar, and older, married woman. This relationship came to an abrupt end when Goethe left for Italy in 1786 without warning. We'll discuss Jerusalem in a bit more detail as we read, I think.
