The Gormenghast books are some of my absolute favourites. It was interesting to see them placed in their context of time. I hadn't realised that they were published before The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Lord of the Rings. Fascinating. I wonder why they are less well known than those behemoths of literature. Great question! I’m not sure – perhaps because they’re more poetically written and less accessible for children – they’re rich, ambiguous, nuanced novels. They’re brilliant, aren’t they?
